The township received its name from Captain Benjamin Godfrey, an early and prominent citizen.((<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/historyofmadison00brin#page\/505\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ibid.<\/a>, 505.)) The village of Godfrey\u00a0was originally known as Monticello,((<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/historyofmadison00brin#page\/505\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ibid.<\/a>, 514.)) and in 1840 had a population of 788.((<em><a href=\"https:\/\/madison-historical.siue.edu\/archive\/items\/show\/583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1840 Census: Sixth Census or Enumeration of the Inhabitants of the United States<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Washington: Blair and Rives, 1841), 386 &#8211; 7.))
