With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 520.)) In 1841 the village was given the name Venice by Dr. Cornelius Campbell, who, along with Charles F. Stamps laid out and plotted the town.((<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/historyofmadison00brin#page\/520\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ibid.<\/a>, 522.)) By 1880, Venice had a population of 612.((<a href=\"https:\/\/census.gov\/library\/publications\/1883\/dec\/vol-01-population.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Statistics of the Population of the United States at the Tenth Census<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Washington: Government Printing Office, 1883), 139.))
