Numerous towns were established and then abandoned in the area in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, including Milton, Chippewa, Gibraltar, and St. Mary\u2019s.((<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/historyofmadison00brin#page\/417\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated.
