The town was platted in 1858 by George W. Carr and George A. Smith. Previously the area was also referred to as Milton, Emerald, Wann or Wanda Station, and Alton Junction.((<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/historyofmadison00brin#page\/419\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 420 &#8211; 421.)) By 1900, East Alton had a population of 454 people.((<a href=\"https:\/\/census.gov\/library\/publications\/1901\/dec\/vol-01-population.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Census Reports Volume I: Population Part I<\/em><\/a> (Washington: United States Census Office, 1901), 126.))
