2020 Liberty Middle School Class Visit (97 total)

These artifacts were brought by students to be scanned as part of a three-day lesson offered by Madison Historical on February 5, 6, and 13, 2020 at Liberty Middle School in Edwardsville. The lesson was given five class periods of students in an American history class taught by Rachel Harris.

	March 29, 1903 Wedding Photo of Henry & Rebecca ‘nee Deye Balster	This is a wedding photo of Anna Rebbeca Dyee Balster and Henry Balster. She raised Arlene Renken. This is part of a collection which includes the marriage certificate of the couple who were wed in Bethalto, Illinois on March 29th in 1903. This artifact was contributed by Rachel Harris in February of 2020 as part of a visit to her classroom at Liberty Middle School.	March 29, 1903	March 4, 2020
	1911 Minted Chinese Coin	This item is a memento coin for the Birth of the Republic of China. It was minted in China in 1911 and was passed down through the Huang Family. 	1912 Harper Brothers Publication of Huckleberry Finn	This is a copy of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn from 1912. It has a green and black cover and inside has the signature of an unknown person. This book was digitized as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Aurora Wilke.	1912	March 4, 2020
	1919 Halfpenny from the UK	This is a Halfpenny from 1919 when the UK controlled India made from bronze, stating "George the Fifth, by the grace of god King of all Britain, Defennder of the Faith, Emperor of India, in Latin." By long-standing traditions, the legends of ruling British monarchs are rendered in Latin. On the front is George V's bare face and on the back is the figure of Britannia seated facing right on a rock wearing a helmet and flowing robes and she holds a trident with a shield which bears the combined crosses of the Union Flag. This coin was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Varsha Venigalla. The coin was given the student's mother by their grandmother when their mother came to America.	1919	March 4, 2020
	1920 Buffalo Nickel	This is a 1920 Buffalo Nickel (or Indian-Head nickel) that was minted from 1913-1938. This nickel was originally designed by James E. Fraser. There were about a total of 1.2 Billion of these Buffalo nickels minted before October 1938, when the Jefferson nickel began production and circulation. Nickels like these are worth about 10 cents if they are dateless, and 60-70 cents if they are in good condition. However, In uncirculated condition, these coins can be worth about three thousand dollars. This artifact was photographed as a part of a Madison Historical clas trip to Liberty Middle School in February 2020. 	1900s Suspension Insulator	This suspension insulator separated the line conductors and supported them electrically. This object is very rusted and also is very corroded. The material on the top is ceramic, with the reason why they use ceramic being because it's a non-conductive metal. 	1921 "Morgan Dollar" Coins	These are silver dollar coins, called the "Morgan Dollar" after the United States Mint Engraver George T. Morgan. The "Morgan" entered circulation after its mint in 1878 and continued to be minted until 1904. In 1921, the "Morgan" was again entered into circulation to fill the void of previous Morgan Coins which had been meted down and shipped to Britain to aid their economy during World War I. These coins were digitized as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Paul Kostich.	1921	March 4, 2020
	100,000 Reichsbank Mark from German Depression	This German Reichsbank Mark is an example of the currency issued following the German Depression Following World War I, which resulted in massive amounts of hyperinflation. The inflation began in 1914 and ended in 1923. The currency was completely revamped at the end of 1923 with the creation of the currency of the Retenmark. The Retenmark was later replaced in 1924 by the Reichsmark. 	1929 The Holy Bible-- King James Verson	This is a family bible from 1929 lined with gold pages and a silver trimming. This bible was digitized as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. 	Hartsburg outhouse replica from the 1930s	This is a doll-sized model of an outhouse built in the 1930s. It has two different bathroom doors. One was labeled "HERR" in red and the other was labeled "DAMEN" in the same red ink. There are little toilets inside each door. This object was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Jacob Wibben. The outhouse was created by the student's great uncle, twice removed.	1930s	March 4, 2020
