Originally from Eastern Kentucky, William Hinch is considered the first American to make a home within the boundaries of Alhambra Township.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers (Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 550.)) The village of Alhambra was laid out by Dr. Louis Sheppard in 1850,((Ibid., 553.)) and was incorporated April 5, 1884.((Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962. (Edwardsville: East 10 Publishing, 1962.), 61.)) By 1870 it had a population of 101.((Francis A.
