Grantfork village, located in Saline and Leef Townships, was originally named Fitz James and then Saline. Henry K. Lathey, James Carpenter, George Fulls, Jonas R. Gale, Z. Lowe, and William F. De Wolf laid out the town in 1840.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers (Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 537.)) The village of Saline was officially incorporated on February 18, 1886,((Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962. (Edwardsville: East 10 Publishing, 1962.), 61.)) and by 1900 had a population of 151.((Census Reports Volume I: Population Part I (Washington: United States Census Office, 1901), 126.)) In 1920, Saline changed its name to Grantfork, at which time it had a population of 80.((Fourteenth Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1920, Population 1920 (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1921), 303.)) As of the 2010 census, Grantfork village has 337 residents.((Illinois: 2010, Summary Population and Housing Characteristics, 2010 Census of Population and Housing (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 2012), 126.))
