This photograph shows Ruan Trucking Company drivers, terminal employees, and tanker trucks at the company terminal in Wood River in the 1950s. The company delivered refined petroleum products from all of the area refineries with tanker trucks. There are 39 male drivers and managers and one female employee, the office secretary, in front of company trucks at the terminal. One of the drivers is Carl McKenzie, who possessed the photograph. |

1943 Letter from Spencer T. Olin to Armond L. Hutchens |
This letter is an original letter from Spencer T. Olin, Vice President of Western Cartridge Company in East Alton, Illinois to Armond L. Hutchens. Hutchens, an employee of the Western Cartridge Company was leaving employment to join the armed forces. Olin sends Hutchens well wishes from the entire Western organizations as Hutchens was leaving to fight in World War II. Olin asks for information about the functioning of firearms and ammunition in regards to any failures and malfunctions. Olin’s letter has Hutchens’ last name spelled incorrectly. Western Cartridge Company became Olin, Winchester. |

1945 Church of the Redeemer Congregational Church in Alton |
This photograph was taken in November 1945 as part of the commemoration of the Church of the Redeemer’s 75th anniversary. The church was first built in 1870 and was expanded in 1902. The building still stands at the intersection of Sixth and Henry Streets (600 Henry Street) in Alton, Illinois. As of July 2017, it is the site of the Whole Truth Church of Christ. |

This is a transcribed copy of the 1830 abstract federal census of Madison County. This lists the total number of people, the number of free inhabitants, the number of enslaved inhabitants, and the population to be used in calculating representatives and taxation. Because enslaved African Americans were counted as 3/5 of a person for representation under the United States Constitution, the population to be used for representation differs from the actual number of inhabitants of Madison County. |
