Memorandum on Illinois School District Organization from the Superintendent of Public Instruction |
This 1968 memorandum was sent from the Superintendent of Public Instruction to county superintendents and school administrators in Illinois. It discusses the creation of the Department of School District Organization. It further expresses the ability for school districts to consolidate based on county resident popular vote. It speaks to the amount of state aid that funds consolidated schools and discusses the importance of working together to maintain the integrity of education. |

Model Woodcut Tiger for Edwardsville High School |
This small tiger woodcut was carved by Edward Ladd as a model for a larger tiger statue at Edwardsville High School. The woodcut is in the possession of his grandaughter, Candace Ladd, as of 2017. |

New Lincoln School Building |
This photograph shows the second Lincoln School building, which was constructed in 1911. The Lincoln School was a public school for African Americans in Edwardsville. The school closed in 1950 due to the desegregation of the Edwardsville school system, and was renovated in 1952 as a Kindergarten through 6th grade school. The school closed permanently in 1972. Today, the building is home to the Mannie Jackson Center for the Humanities. |

Phil Smith Oral History Interview |
In this oral history interview, Phil Smith describes growing up in Venice, Illinois, in the 1950s-1970s. He discusses organized crime and gambling in the city, the Democratic Party, and the police. He also describes his career as an educator and changes in the schools over time, including changes that accompanied racial integration in Venice and Madison. Finally, Smith describes his work with the Venice Historical Society and efforts to preserve the city's history and traditions. |
