2020 Liberty Middle School Class Visit (97 total)
These artifacts were brought by students to be scanned as part of a three-day lesson offered by Madison Historical on February 5, 6, and 13, 2020 at Liberty Middle School in Edwardsville. The lesson was given five class periods of students in an American history class taught by Rachel Harris.

1912 Harper Brothers Publication of Huckleberry Finn | This is a copy of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn from 1912. It has a green and black cover and inside has the signature of an unknown person. 1919 Halfpenny from the UK | This is a Halfpenny from 1919 when the UK controlled India made from bronze, stating "George the Fifth, by the grace of god King of all Britain, Defennder of the Faith, Emperor of India, in Latin." By long-standing traditions, the legends of ruling British monarchs are rendered in Latin. On the front is George V's bare face and on the back is the figure of Britannia seated facing right on a rock wearing a helmet and flowing robes and she holds a trident with a shield which bears the combined crosses of the Union Flag. This coin was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Varsha Venigalla. The coin was given the student's mother by their grandmother when their mother came to America. |

1920 Buffalo Nickel | This is a 1920 Buffalo Nickel (or Indian-Head nickel) that was minted from 1913-1938. This nickel was originally designed by James E. Fraser. There were about a total of 1.2 Billion of these Buffalo nickels minted before October 1938, when the Jefferson nickel began production and circulation. Nickels like these are worth about 10 cents if they are dateless, and 60-70 cents if they are in good condition. However, In uncirculated condition, these coins can be worth about three thousand dollars. 1921 "Morgan Dollar" Coins | These are silver dollar coins, called the "Morgan Dollar" after the United States Mint Engraver George T. Morgan. The "Morgan" entered circulation after its mint in 1878 and continued to be minted until 1904. In 1921, the "Morgan" was again entered into circulation to fill the void of previous Morgan Coins which had been meted down and shipped to Britain to aid their economy during World War I. 1936 Indian Head (Buffalo) Nickel and Half Dollar Coin | This is coinage produced by the United States, a Nickel and Half-Dollar. The smaller coin is a Buffalo Nickel that is in fair condition and was minted in 1936. The larger one is a silver half dollar in worn condition that was also minted 1936. These coins were photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. They were brought to class by Caden Sexton. |

1940s Apple Cranberry Salad | This is a recipe that has been in Emma Hosto's family for approximately 8 decades and is made for special occasions and holidays by the family. The recipe states to make the base add 1 bag of romaine lettuce, 1 cup of shredded swiss cheese, 1 medium apple, 1/4cup dried cranberries, and 1/2 cup chopped cashews. The dressing calls for 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup red wine vinegar, 2T lemon juice, 1T diced onions, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Mix all the dressing ingredients together, lastly add 2/3 cup veg. oil and pour over the base.
