Discharge papers of Bethalto Resident and World War II Veteran Pvt. Edgar Wells | This is a copy of the honorary discharge papers of World War II Veteran and Bethalto resident Private Edgar Wells. Wells served in the United States army from 1941 to March 1944, when he was honorably discharged. He served in Battery "A", 882nd Field Artillery Battalion, 70th Infantry Division. 1943-44 Venice High School Basketball Team | This photograph shows members of the 1943-44 Venice High School basketball team. The team was coached by John Warford and had a record of 8-16. Some of the members of the team went on to serve in World War II. At the time of this photograph, Venice schools were segregated, so all members of the basketball team were white. From left to right: Jim Reidelberger, Captain Jim Miller, Earl McCart, Bernard Scaturro, Harold Hackney All but Jim Reidelberger were in the Class of '44; Riedelberger was in the Class of '45. |

1943 Letter from Spencer T. Olin to Armond L. Hutchens | This letter is an original letter from Spencer T. Olin, Vice President of Western Cartridge Company in East Alton, Illinois to Armond L. Hutchens. Hutchens, an employee of the Western Cartridge Company was leaving employment to join the armed forces. Olin sends Hutchens well wishes from the entire Western organizations as Hutchens was leaving to fight in World War II. Olin asks for information about the functioning of firearms and ammunition in regards to any failures and malfunctions. Olin’s letter has Hutchens’ last name spelled incorrectly. War Rations Book from World War II | This World War II war rations book was issued to Mary Whipple of Alton in 1943. It contains numerous stamps used to purchase goods rationed during the war. The stamps are decorated with artillery, aircraft carriers, tanks, and airplanes. Some of the stamps were already used.
