2020 Liberty Middle School Class Visit (97 total)

These artifacts were brought by students to be scanned as part of a three-day lesson offered by Madison Historical on February 5, 6, and 13, 2020 at Liberty Middle School in Edwardsville. The lesson was given five class periods of students in an American history class taught by Rachel Harris.

	1921 "Morgan Dollar" Coins	These are silver dollar coins, called the "Morgan Dollar" after the United States Mint Engraver George T. Morgan. The "Morgan" entered circulation after its mint in 1878 and continued to be minted until 1904. In 1921, the "Morgan" was again entered into circulation to fill the void of previous Morgan Coins which had been meted down and shipped to Britain to aid their economy during World War I. These coins were digitized as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Paul Kostich.	1921	March 4, 2020
	1900s Suspension Insulator	This suspension insulator separated the line conductors and supported them electrically. This object is very rusted and also is very corroded. The material on the top is ceramic, with the reason why they use ceramic being because it's a non-conductive metal. This insulator was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Zachary Noga.	1920 - 1990	March 4, 2020
	1920 Buffalo Nickel	This is a 1920 Buffalo Nickel (or Indian-Head nickel) that was minted from 1913-1938. This nickel was originally designed by James E. Fraser. There were about a total of 1.2 Billion of these Buffalo nickels minted before October 1938, when the Jefferson nickel began production and circulation. Nickels like these are worth about 10 cents if they are dateless, and 60-70 cents if they are in good condition. However, In uncirculated condition, these coins can be worth about three thousand dollars. This artifact was photographed as a part of a Madison Historical clas trip to Liberty Middle School in February 2020. 	1919 Halfpenny from the UK	This is a Halfpenny from 1919 when the UK controlled India made from bronze, stating "George the Fifth, by the grace of god King of all Britain, Defennder of the Faith, Emperor of India, in Latin." By long-standing traditions, the legends of ruling British monarchs are rendered in Latin. On the front is George V's bare face and on the back is the figure of Britannia seated facing right on a rock wearing a helmet and flowing robes and she holds a trident with a shield which bears the combined crosses of the Union Flag. This coin was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Varsha Venigalla. The coin was given the student's mother by their grandmother when their mother came to America.	1919	March 4, 2020
	1912 Harper Brothers Publication of Huckleberry Finn	This is a copy of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn from 1912. It has a green and black cover and inside has the signature of an unknown person. This book was digitized as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Aurora Wilke.	1912	March 4, 2020
	1911 Minted Chinese Coin	This item is a memento coin for the Birth of the Republic of China. It was minted in China in 1911 and was passed down through the Huang Family. 	March 29, 1903 Wedding Photo of Henry & Rebecca ‘nee Deye Balster	This is a wedding photo of Anna Rebbeca Dyee Balster and Henry Balster. She raised Arlene Renken. This is part of a collection which includes the marriage certificate of the couple who were wed in Bethalto, Illinois on March 29th in 1903. This artifact was contributed by Rachel Harris in February of 2020 as part of a visit to her classroom at Liberty Middle School.	March 29, 1903	March 4, 2020
	March 29, 1903 Marriage Certificate of John Heinrich Balster and A. Rebekkah Deye, Bethalto, Ilinois	This is the marriage certificate of John Heinrich Balster and A. Rebekka Deye, who were married in Bethalto, Illinois on March 29, 1903. On the certificate are religious scenes depicting some of the different sacraments, a scene of communion and the Lutheran tenet of practicing religion in the home. This artifact was contributed by Rachel Harris in February of 2020 as part of a visit to her classroom at Liberty Middle School.	March 29, 1903	March 4, 2020
	1901 Culver Block Brick	This is a brick made by Culver Blocks on February 1, 1901. The item was found in Edwardsville, IL. The sides of the brick are chipped and uneven in certain spaces. The Madison County Historial Society used Culver Blocks on their redevelopment of the Plaza between the 1836 Weir Home and the Archival Library in Edwardsville Illinois for historical continuity. This brick was brought in by Skye Byrd as a part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in February 2020.	1901-2-1	March 4, 2020
	1861-1865 Hand Carved Civil War Pipe	This is a dark brown rough hand carved wooden smoking pipe. John R. Dove carved this while he was fighting in the Civil War and he used it for tobacco smoking during his service. Dove served in the Illinois National Guard, 21st infantry. This wooden pipe was brought in by Quinton Kolnsberg as a part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in February 2020.	1900s	March 4, 2020
