Rudolph (Rudy) Wilson Oral History | This oral history interview with Ellen Nore-Nordhouser is part of a collection of oral histories conducted as part of a research project related to the 50th Anniversary of SIUE between 2005 and 2008. In this interview, Vice-Chancellor Rudolph (Rudy) Wilson discusses the changes in the Metro-East Area. Wilson addresses his work as a member of the Education Department faculty and dealing with racial tensions throughout the Metro-East community as well as inside the educational system after being recruited to teach at SIU Edwardsville, Illinois from the school system in California. His attempts to locate housing, his work in charity and volunteerism, and his bid for political office on the local School Board are also discussed in the interview. |

Nevart Hagopian Oral History Interview | This oral history interview with Nevart Hagopian was part of oral histories conducted in the fall 2001 semester of History 447: Oral History. Nevart Hagopian is a survivor of the Armenian genocide who left Armenia with her mother at the age of 12 in 1920 and migrated to the Lincoln Place neighborhood of Granite City. In the interview, she discusses the Armenian community and culture in Lincoln Place. Hagopian primarily speaks in Armenian in the interview, with Vartan Kassabian serving as a translator. Father Kassabian was a priest for St. Gregory Armenian Church in Granite City. Note: The original archive copies of the interview transcript and biographical summary had grading marks and corrections on them. We converted the transcript and biographical summary to editable text and made the corrections to remove grading marks. |

Mary Spaich Oral History Interview | This oral history interview with Mary Spaich was part of oral histories conducted in the fall 2001 semester of History 447: Oral History. In this interview, Mary Spaich discusses growing up in the Lincoln Place neighborhood of Granite City. She was born in Granite City in 1916 to Serbian parents who had immigrated from Yugoslavia in 1914. She describes her life in Lincoln Place and changes in the area since her childhood. |

Declaration of Covenants and Restriction for Burns Farm from 1991 | This is a paper copy in black and white of Burns Farm Subdivision bylaws. It was used to tell the people who lived in this neighborhood how to build their houses and other rules they had to follow. This document was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Eva Witt. It was given to the Witt family when they bought their house in the neighborhood. |

Triad High School Newspaper from May 1996 | This is an edition of the "Knightwriter", which was the Triad High School's school newspaper. This certain one is from May 1996 and goes into life at the high school and focuses on the seniors graduating in the spring of 1996. Hartsburg outhouse replica from the 1930s | This is a doll-sized model of an outhouse built in the 1930s. It has two different bathroom doors. One was labeled "HERR" in red and the other was labeled "DAMEN" in the same red ink. There are little toilets inside each door. This object was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Jacob Wibben. The outhouse was created by the student's great uncle, twice removed. |

1919 Halfpenny from the UK | This is a Halfpenny from 1919 when the UK controlled India made from bronze, stating "George the Fifth, by the grace of god King of all Britain, Defennder of the Faith, Emperor of India, in Latin." By long-standing traditions, the legends of ruling British monarchs are rendered in Latin. On the front is George V's bare face and on the back is the figure of Britannia seated facing right on a rock wearing a helmet and flowing robes and she holds a trident with a shield which bears the combined crosses of the Union Flag. This coin was photographed as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Liberty Middle School in spring 2020. It was brought to class by Varsha Venigalla. The coin was given the student's mother by their grandmother when their mother came to America. |

Animal Control Pet Tag | This is a gold colored Animal Control pet tag with faded lettering reading "2006 Rabies Vacc 36990 IL Dept of Agri Madison County." It was used to identify pets and let people know if they have had their rabies vaccination. Glen Carbon 1893 Glass Insulator | This is a glass electrical insulator. It is made of thick, green glass. On one side of the insulator it reads "Patent/May 2 1893" and on the other it reads, "Hemingray/No. 12." It stands about 3.5 inches tall. Insulators like these are common near bike trails and creeks in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon which were part of the "Rails to Trails" conversion of lite rail corridors into community trails by the Madison County Transport starting in the 1990s.
