The first Americans to settle the Maryville region were German farmers who arrived in the 1840s. At the time, the area was known as Pleasant Ridge. Charles William Frederich Lange, a German immigrant, and his wife Mary dedicated a portion of their land for public use in 1900. Approximately 300 people lived in the area at the time, and their land dedication led to the incorporation of Maryville on June 4, 1902. The town was named for Mary Lange.((“History of Maryville,” Maryville, IL. Accessed January 19, 2018; Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962.
