Following the discovery of coal in February 1904,((Livingston Centennial Committee, History of Livingston, Illinois, 1905 – 2005Madison Historical, accessed January 29, 2018, 6.)) the village of Williamson was laid out by the Mt. Olive and Staunton Coal Company using land purchased from Henry Liche.((W. T. Norton, ed., Centennial History of Madison County, Illinois, and Its People, 1812 to 1912. (Chicago: The Lewis Publishing Company, 1912), 589.)) The coal mining village of Williamson was incorporated March 14, 1907.((Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962. In 1910 Williamson had a population of 648.((Fifteenth Census of the United States: 1930, Population Volume I (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1931), 303.)) As of the 2010 census, the village of Williamson has a population of 230.((llinois: 2010, Summary Population and Housing Characteristics, 2010 Census of Population and Housing (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 2012), 64.))
