Carpenter is an unincorporated community in Hamel Township. In 1877, the Wabash railroad built a station and named the area Carpenter. That same year, John F. Opel laid out the town, and the plat was recorded May 9, 1877. A number of grain houses were built around the station, as well as a post office.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated.
