1986-87 Venice High School State Boy's Basketball Champions | This is a photograph of the 1986-87 Venice High School Boy's Basketball team, which won the Illinois State Championship in Class A. The team narrowly defeated Okawville High School 56-54 in the state championship game held March 14, 1987 in Champaign, Illinois. The members of the team were Daryl Buie, Jesse Hall, Vincent Harris, Daryl Jackson, Hosea King, Orlando Love, John Marchbanks, Dale Turner, Wilfred Wigfall, and Lionel Wiley. The team was coached by Clinton Harris. |

Bryan Mathis Oral History Interview | In this oral history interview, Bryan Mathis describes his childhood in Venice, Illinois, and his experiences as an African-American man growing up in the area during the era of desegregation. He describes the various forms of bigotry and racism he's faced in the communities of Venice, Madison, Granite City, and St. Louis, as well as his feeling about the communities of Venice and Granite City today. He describes how his education, his participation in sports, his service in the military, and key people in his life have influenced him.
