Wells served in the United States army from 1941 to March 1944, when he was honorably discharged. He served in Battery "A", 882nd Field Artillery Battalion, 70th Infantry Division. He was a farmer in Bethalto.

War Rations Book from World War II This World War II war rations book was issued to Mary Whipple of Alton in 1943. It contains numerous stamps used to purchase goods rationed during the war. The stamps are decorated with artillery, aircraft carriers, tanks, and airplanes. Some of the stamps were already used.
