2020 Liberty Middle School Class Visit (97 total)

These artifacts were brought by students to be scanned as part of a three-day lesson offered by Madison Historical on February 5, 6, and 13, 2020 at Liberty Middle School in Edwardsville. The lesson was given five class periods of students in an American history class taught by Rachel Harris.

	1975 Table Cloth with Rose Patches	This table cloth was made by Kiymet Kulavuz in Turkey during the 1970's. She had originally embroidered the rose patches herself, and then sewn them onto a table cloth before she got married. She then retired it to her daughter, Derya Kulavuz-Onal (who currently posseses it as of 2020), as a wedding gift in 2005. 	1969-1975 Italian Lira	These are Italian Liras ranging in date of mint from 1969 and 1975. They were owned by the Great-great-grandfather of Kira Reed of Edwardsville, Illinois, he was born and raised in Bari, Italy until he married and moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1870. There in Oregon, Reed's Great-great-grandfather had three sons and two daughters. When all five of their children grew to adulthood, they moved to Seattle, Washington. Three years after their children had moved out Kira Reed's great-great-grandparents moved back to Bari, Italy. While living in Seattle Kira's great-grandpa had three sons, Scott, Steven and Logan. Kira's great-great-grandfather passed away, he sent my great-grandpa these Italian dollar bills as a keepsake. The money was then passed onto Kira's Great-grandmother and subsequently her son, Steven, who passed it onto his daughter Joleene. Joleene then passed the money onto her daughter Kirra Reed. 	1969 Moscow Ruble Coins	This was the official Russian Currency used between 1917 to the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. At its height, it was worth approximately .991667 USD. This currency was made between 1969 and 1980s. It was probably made in the capital of the Soviet union, Moscow. 	Puka Shell Necklace from the 1960s	Puka shell necklaces were popular in Hawaii in the 1960s. The puka shell necklace was an attractive and inexpensive lei which could be made and sold on the beach. Lia Kampwerth's grandmother was on a trip to Hawaii in the 1960s when she bought this necklace. 	1967 Stanley Handyman Block Plane	The Stanley Handyman block plane is used to shave wood. This wood shaver is made mostly of metal, but has two wooden handles. The grip on the front can be changed out or adjusted. This specific block plane was purchased in the late 1960's, after the specific brand's quality dropped in the 1920s. 	Soviet Ruble	This is a Soviet Ruble, an example of Soviet currency. It is mulicolored, containing orange, red, and teal. It is in the amount of a single (1) ruble of the USSR. The production of the Soviet Rubles was the responsibility of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise or Goznak. 	Cross Necklace from 1960	Lexi Raker's Great Grandmother gave her a very valuable cross necklace soon before she passed away. It's a small, silver cross necklace with the top hook reading: "Amen." The necklace was made circa 1960 in Rome. The necklace is very thin so it is very fragile. 	1959 Abe Lincoln Gets His Chance Paperback Book	This is a 1959 publication Abe Gets His Chance. The book was written by Frances Cavanah and illustrated by Don Silbey. The book is a decomissioned library book from the Hilsboro Library, located in downtown Hilsboro, IL. The book is a biography focusing on the childhood of the U.S. president, Abraham Lincoln. 	1958 Sports Review Magazine from Mount Morris, Illlinois	This issue of Sports Review Magazing was Published in Mount Morris, Illinois, in 1958. The issue's special topic is on baseball. On the cover is a picture of Lew Burdette, a Milwaukee pitcher, along with a caption that reads, "Lew Burdette; the pitcher who made Milwaukee famous."The magazine has some mild cosmetic defects and wrinkles on the cover and interior pages. 	1957 United States Dollar Bill	This dollar bill from the year 1957 was saved by Ratcliff Scott's grandmother, who was born the same year. Scott's grandmother passed the dollar bill down to Ratcliff Scott who owned the bill as of Feburary 2020.
