These artifacts were brought by students to be scanned as part of a three-day lesson offered by Madison Historical on April 12, 15, and 22, 2019 at Civic Memorial High School. The lesson was given to students in a junior American history class taught by Suze Gibson.

The Rational Spelling Book, 1898, owned by Alton Resident Viola Thompson | This 1898 spelling book, "The Rational Spelling Book, Part II" was owned by Alton resident Viola Thompson, whose name is handwritten on the book's front pastedown. The book is intended for fourth grade students and older and may have been used in an Alton classroom. The book includes numerous words for spelling practice and spelling rules from the late 19th century. The Florini Family Opening a Grocery Store in Bethalto in 1937 | This photoraph shows Julio Florini, his wife Delfina Florini, and their son Geno Florini opening a grocery store in Bethalto on Spencer Street and near Route 140 in 1937. In 1942, the Florini's converted the location to a tavern named Geno's 140 Club. The restaurant is still open today.
