Piece of the Berlin Wall Belonging to Bethalto Resident Shelly Niemeier This small fragment of the Berlin Wall was obtained by Bethalto resident Shelly Niemeier around when the wall was destroyed in November and December 1989. The wall famously divided Berlin during the Cold War, and its collapse symbolized the end of the Cold War.

Rawlings Baseball From Vietnam Veteran David Williams This baseball belongs to David Williams, a resident of Bethalto and baseball player. Williams is a veteran of the Vietnam War who played baseball while serving in Vietnam. He obtained this particular baseball after returning from Vietnam.

1969 Better Homes and Gardens: New Cook Book This Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book published in 1969 belonged to Alton resident Christina Hall. Four of the book's pages were digitized, with some recipes designated for "Ladies Only" and "Men Only." The "Ladies Only" meal contains a crab-artichoke bake, assorted relishes, rolls, and orange soufflé. The "Men Only" meal contains cheese stuffed apples, assorted crackers, shrimp cocktail, Hasenpfeffer, mashed potatoes with gravy, peas, carrots, "Men’s Favorite Salad," rolls, and red cherry pie. The smaller and lighter ladies meal demonstrates gender notions prevalent in the 1960s.

1965 Poster for Farm Auction in Belleview, Illinois This poster from 1965 was used to advertise a farm auction in Belleview, Illinois in Calhoun County. Joyce A. Jennings, the owner of the farm, was selling the farm following the death of her husband, and was auctioning off various farm equipment, crops, and other miscellaneous material goods. A lunch was also held at the auction, provided by the North Calhoun Woman’s Club.

Gas Tanker Convoy in West Germany in the 1960s This photograph shows a gas tanker convoy in West Germany. One of the men in the convoy is Bethalto resident Everett Jett, who was stationed in West Germany from January 1964 to June 1966. Jett served in the 3-703rd Maintenance Battalion, in which he transported gas to other vehicles using this tanker. Jett later served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. When he retunred home to Bethalto, he became a truck driver.

Volume 6 of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Reference Encyclopedia from 1959 This volume of the Funk & Wagnalls Standard Reference Encyclopedia was publisehd in 1959. The entry on Chemistry was photographed. Though the encyclopedia covers words from "Cell" to "Colo," it does not contain an entry on the Cold War.
