Nathan Scaritt was the first American to farm in Township 6 north, range 10 west, however, Joseph Reynolds was the first to build a cabin in 1826.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers (Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 506.)) The township received its name from Captain Benjamin Godfrey, an early and prominent citizen.((Ibid., 505.)) The village of Godfrey was originally known as Monticello,((Ibid., 514.)) and in 1840 had a population of 788.((1840 Census: Sixth Census or Enumeration of the Inhabitants of the United States (Washington: Blair and Rives, 1841), 386 – 7.)) As of the 2010 census the village of Godfrey has 17,982 residents.((Illinois: 2010, Summary Population and Housing Characteristics, 2010 Census of Population and Housing (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 2012), 64.))
