Hamel
John Edgar was the first American to have his farmland recorded in Township 5 North, Range 7 West in 1815.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers (Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 532.)) The township was later named for A. J. Hamel, a township resident who established a flour mill and general store in the 1860s.((Ibid., 533)) The village of Hamel was officially incorporated February 19, 1955,((Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962. (Edwardsville: East 10 Publishing, 1962.), 61.)) and in 1960 the village had a population of 362.((1960 Census of Population, Advance Reports, Final Population Counts: Illinois (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 1960), 17.)) As of the 2010 census, the village of Hamel has 816 residents.((Illinois: 2010, Summary Population and Housing Characteristics, 2010 Census of Population and Housing (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 2012), 64.))
