The village of Bethalto was laid out and platted by Joel U. Starkey in 1854. Bethalto was incorporated on April 19, 1869.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. By 1880, Bethalto had a population of 1,256.((Statistics of the Population of the United States at the Tenth Census (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1883), 139.)) As of the 2010 census, Bethalto village has 9,521 residents.((Illinois: 2010, Summary Population and Housing Characteristics, 2010 Census of Population and Housing (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 2012), 112.))
