Venice

The township of Venice was settled by Americans as early as 1804.((History of Madison County, Illinois, Illustrated. With Biographical Sketches of many Prominent Men and Pioneers (Edwardsville: W. R. Brink and Company, 1882), 520.)) In 1841 the village was given the name Venice by Dr. Cornelius Campbell, who, along with Charles F. Stamps laid out and plotted the town.((Ibid., 522.)) By 1880, Venice had a population of 612.((Statistics of the Population of the United States at the Tenth Census (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1883), 139.)) Venice was officially incorporated February 5, 1897.((Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962. (Edwardsville: East 10 Publishing, 1962.), 61.)) In 1950, Venice reached the height of its population with 6,226 people.((A Report of the Seventeenth Decennial Census of the United States, Census of Population: 1950, Volume I Number of Inhabitants (Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1952), 13-31.))
