Godfrey

Nathan Scaritt was the first American to farm in Township 6 north, range 10 west, however, Joseph Reynolds was the first to build a cabin in 1826.1 The township received its name from Captain Benjamin Godfrey, an early and prominent citizen.3 The village of Godfrey was originally known as Monticello,2 and in 1840 had a population of 788.4 As of the 2010 census the village of Godfrey has 17,982 residents.5
