In 1805 Thomas Kirkpatrick was the original white settler of Edwardsville and named it in honor of Ninian Edwards, the Territorial Governor of Illinois. Edwardsville city was incorporated on February 23, 1819,((Flagg, James S., editor, Our 150 Years, 1812-1962. (Edwardsville: East 10 Publishing, 1962.), 61.)) and by 1840 the population of Edwardsville reached 616 inhabitants.((1840 Census: Sixth Census or Enumeration of the Inhabitants of the United States (Washington: Blair and Rives, 1841), 386 – 7.)) As of the 2010 census, the city of Edwardsville has a population of 24,293.((Illinois: 2010, Summary Population and Housing Characteristics, 2010 Census of Population and Housing (Washington: Bureau of the Census, 2012), 62.))
