In 1805 Thomas Kirkpatrick was the original white settler of Edwardsville and named it in honor of Ninian Edwards, the Territorial Governor of Illinois. Edwardsville city was incorporated on February 23, 1819,1 and by 1840 the population of Edwardsville reached 616 inhabitants.2 As of the 2010 census, the city of Edwardsville has a population of 24,293.3
