Maryville Mining Collection

This collection contains photographs and documents related to the mining history of Maryville, most of them related to the Donk Bros. Mining Company. The items were digitized at the Maryville Heritage Museum and copies were donated to Madison Historical.

All four of the men are wearing lighted helmets. Rough cut wooden support beams are prominent thorughout the mine shaft. MHM-P-0002.jpg This is a black and white panoramic group image of the "First Annual Picnic" of the Maryville, Il local chapter of the International Hod Carriers Union which took place September, 6th of 1915. The miners are werearing suits with ties and have ribbons pinned onto the left side of their chests. The chapter number is listed as 1802 on the front of the image. On the top left corner of the photograph is written "Photo By Idoux Schnieder Center Bldg St. Louis." Miners in the top right corner are holding a "United Mine Workers of America" banner with their local chapter information running across the top of the banner. 1915 Nov 13, 2019

Three buildings are visible in the image including the tall exteriror of the mine entrance, four smokstacks, as well as a power line in the foreground. The second image is an edited version of the original commissioned by the Maryville Heritage Association. The ad features a woman and child in front of a coal burning display and foldable billboard which reads "Office 522 Olive St. St. Louis" "Our 'Domestic" Cannot be Excelled in Purity Cleanliness and Free Buring Qualities" "Donk's 'Domestic" Bituminous Coal Lump Egg and Stove Sies" "Donk's Antracite Coal Best Grade All Sizes." Next to the stove is a bin full of coal labeled as "Anthracite" Coal from Donk. Antracite is a particularly desirable type of coal because it is particularly hard and clean burning. circa1900s Nov 13, 2019

It originally ran alongside the St. Louis Troy and Eastern Railroad line and Parkview Street known as Chinatown road at the turn of the century.
