This photogrpah shows Esther Bernhardt operating the switchboard for the entire community of Prairietown in 1954. Prairietown is an unincorporated community northwest of Worden. The calendar on the wall shows May and June of 1954.

This bottle was scanned as part of a Madison Historical class visit to Civic Memorial High School in spring 2019. It was brought to class by Bernhardt's great-grandson, Tony Singleton.

Stacy-Abigail-O-001_a.JPG Glen Carbon 1893 Glass Insulator This is a glass electrical insulator. It is made of thick, green glass. On one side of the insulator it reads "Patent/May 2 1893" and on the other it reads, "Hemingray/No. 12." It stands about 3.5 inches tall. Insulators like these are common near bike trails and creeks in Edwardsville and Glen Carbon which were part of the "Rails to Trails" conversion of lite rail corridors into community trails by the Madison County Transport starting in the 1990s.

Goodman-Madelyn-o-001_a.JPG Wooden Replica Figurine of the Wooden Wildey Theater This is a wooden replica of The Wildey Theater. Widley Theater was built by the Edwardsville Chapter of the International Order of Odd Fellows as an Opera House in 1909. The second floor of Widley Theater was used as a community room and the third floor was used by Odd Fellows for meetings. The theater, with its carved wooden railings, box seats, and large stage, served as the setting for many plays, operettas, community events, and later, for films.

Hosto-Emma-D-001.jpg 1940s Apple Cranberry Salad This is a recipe that has been in Emma Hosto's family for approximately 8 decades and is made for special occasions and holidays by the family. The recipe states to make the base add 1 bag of romaine lettuce, 1 cup of shredded swiss cheese, 1 medium apple, 1/4cup dried cranberries, and 1/2 cup chopped cashews. The dressing calls for 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup red wine vinegar, 2T lemon juice, 1T diced onions, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Mix all the dressing ingredients together, lastly add 2/3 cup veg. oil and pour over the base.

Brockmeier-Luke-O-001_a.jpg Old Box Phone This wall-mounted wooden box telephone was a staple in the household in the early 20th century. One would speak into a funnel that protruded from the front of the box and would listen through a funnel that would have been brought up to the ear. When a phone call was directed to this phone, a mechanism inside the box would ring the two bells placed on the box In the telephone pictured, the bells are mouned on the front. Telephones like this often included a space for a paper record of phone numbers that one might find useful, such as the phone numbers of different services or family and friends. A paper such as this is included with the pictured telephone.

It displays Jolda, Lakewood, and Oakdale subdivsions in Madision County, Illinois. On the map are identifiable train tracks owned by the Chicago North Railroad and Northpole Western Railroad. These neighborhoods are in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Also present on the map are geographical markers such as lakes as well as traffic roads, and identifiable land plots throughout the area.

Grandlund-Zoey-B-001_a.jpg "One Step Closer" The 2002 Civic Memorial High School Yearbook This is a 2002 Civic Memorial High School Yearbook has a hard cover and is purple and gold with eagle prints on the front cover. It contains 208 pages and was created in 2002. The spine reads 'Civic Memorial High Schools Spectator Vol. 51' in gold shiny letters. This document was sold for $34 and the pictures were done by Delmar Studios of Edwardsville, Illinois. This book belonged to Cherise McArthur.
